Largest ATL Tech Company You’ve Never Heard of Pushes Front & Center

The countdown to the official launch of SUPPLY.com (formerly National Builder Supply) is officially over. It is here to disrupt the archaic plumbing industry, as “the largest Atlanta tech company you’ve never heard of.” While this rebrand may seem like an overnight success, it is years in the making (in addition to 5 years of persistently coaxing of a Californian who owned the domain). Hype wanted to know what fueled the explosive success of this $72M company and where the rocket ship is headed next, so we sat down with Co-Founder/CEO Marcus Morgan, Director of UX Matt Hobbs, and Content Strategist Carey Tucker to get the scoop.

“We saw this huge opportunity, but our brand (National Builder Supply) didn’t match the opportunity we envisioned. That’s when we found a new name, SUPPLY.com,” stated Morgan. “The construction industry hasn’t embraced e-commerce because so much of what contractors and designers do depends on relationships. Plumbing and lighting products are highly technical, so pros need someone on the inside to help answer questions.”

Morgan co-founded SUPPLY.com in 2004 alongside Atlanta technology veterans, Heath Hyneman and Kevin Wallace (GT FlashPoint Mentors and Co-Founders of Hypepotamus). Over the past 11 years, their team of technologists, creatives, engineers and trade experts have worked diligently to become the 110 person company they are today. “In the last year, we’ve hired 53 people, 20 within the last quarter alone,” said Tucker. “We’ve also added 5,500 square feet of office space. As you walk the halls, you can still catch the scent of fresh paint,” said Hobbs.

“SUPPLY.com offers a unique combination of relationships and technology. By merging these two elements, we are in a really sweet spot. Unlike traditional showrooms or supply houses, we offer a robust technology platform for our customers. Also, unlike large, impersonal e-tailers like Amazon, every pro customer gets their own personal account manager to help them run their business better,” said Hobbs. When touring SUPPLY.com HQ, it was the company culture that stood out most. The conference room where the interview took place had “Build Something Great” adorned in large bold letters on the wall, one of many murals throughout the office. The palpable buzz and energy in their space are embodied by a massive rocket ship painted in the center of the office, inspired by a quote from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Schmidt said, “If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask which seat, just get on.” Tucker relayed that this sentiment is what drew him to get on board with the team earlier this year.
“People are leaving jobs at large, established Atlanta companies to come work with us,” said Morgan. “All the ingredients for a badass company are here.” Stay up-to-date with SUPPLY.com by following them on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
