Highlight Anything on the Internet

Highlight Anything on the Internet

Highlight anything on the Internet. A statement like that has wide implications. For those simply browsing the web, being able to highlight text on any page will cut out the need for tedious emails riddled with quotes or books stuffed with post-it notes. For marketers, consider what it could mean to not only know what people are clicking on, but exactly what content on the page resonates with your audience. A game changer to say the least. Atlanta-based startup, Shortweb, believes what's important should be obvious. We recently chatted with one of the of the company’s co-founders to learn more.

Founded by Georgia Tech students Miguel Oller and Ricardo De Andrade (pictured above) Shortweb is a web extension that allows users to highlight text and share the page with the highlights. “With new sources of information fighting for our attention every day, time has become a luxury for many,” explains Oller. “Take a look at any online discussion of a lengthy piece and you are sure to come across the phrase tl;dr (too long; didn't read). Trying to submit a tweet with more than 140 characters? Tough luck. Doing online research and there's just too much information? Your options are limited. People want a faster way to consume content. Shortweb solves the problem of information overload by making that information bitesized.”

“As people rely more and more on video and images, text has lost people's attention online,” he continues. “This can be attributed to many reasons, but length is definitely one of them. With video, Vine has already shortened people's attention span to 6 seconds. With most of the information online being text, Shortweb aims to provide a better way to read online.”

Both of Shortweb's co-founders are talented students. Miguel is a mechanical engineering major and wrote an automation tool to analyze vehicle parts for Toyota as well as automation software for Goldman Sachs. Ricardo is an industrial engineering and computer science double major. The pair are proud to base their company in Georgia’s capital. “ATL is a great place. Ever since I got here, I've loved it,” says Oller. “Going to Georgia Tech and meeting some of the smartest people I've ever known has shown me the great potential this city has. More recently, having gotten more involved in entrepreneurship, I've been able to utilize all the great resources around: Georgia Tech Startup Semester and Startup Summer, ATDC, ATV, the list goes on. As we've worked on Shortweb, we've set our roots here in Atlanta, and so far, the plan is to stay.”
