Patrick Dempsey's Startup Investment
A San Francisco health technology startup called CrowdMed has secured funding from Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey.
Which begs the question, what could we get Tyler Perry to Fund?
The Scoop On The Startup:
- In total, CrowdMed has raised $2.4 million in seed funding, including Mr. Dempsey’s new contribution and seed investments from the Y Combinator accelerator and lead investors New Enterprise Associates and Khosla Ventures.
- CrowdMed’s chief executive and founder is Jared Heyman. This native Atlantan also founded atl-based infosurv, a survey company that does employee, customer and market research.
- "On CrowdMed, patients with an unknown medical problem can fill out a basic questionnaire and upload photos or videos to request an unofficial diagnosis from a community of “medical detectives.” Site users can suggest a possible diagnosis and even solutions for dealing with some symptoms. Suggestions are voted up or down by the community, with proven medical experts’ responses more heavily weighted than new or unknown users." - WSJ
- Mr. Heyman shared his story and showed his company’s website to Mr. Dempsey while the actor was on a tour of Silicon Valley startups. (A partner at NEA, Patrick Chung, introduced them)
The Scoop on Dempsey:
- This is his first time angel investing
- About a decade ago, Mr. Dempsey’s mother, Amanda Dempsey, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In response Patrick and his siblings opened the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine.
- He plans to invest in more health and wellness startups in the future.
