Vivacious Junior Dev Looking for Startups with Soul
Megan Tiu is a female powerhouse who shifted from film and television to tech after taking an Intro to Computer Science course at GSU. Tiu's leap made a big splash - recently winning second place during ATDC's weekend Hackathon for her work with Groundfloor and landing a gig as the Software Engineer at Atlanta startup, Fittery.

What did you build during your time in the course?
My first project was my personal site, megantiu.com, a simple three-page website. I also recently participated and won second place in ATDC’s Weekend Hackathon. There, I worked on the Groundfloor team to create a RESTful API server in Rails for the mobile solution for their borrowers. I’m also happy to say that the class allowed me to be part of MainMarket, a microfinance crowdfunding platform that facilitates the purchase of small businesses. There, I designed the database structure and developed the back-end architecture.
What other past tech/creative projects have you worked on?
Prior to my time at TTS, I took an Intro to Computer Science class at Georgia State. There, I learned Python and basic CS concepts, thus propelling me into this field. Aside from tech, I got my BA in Film and Television from Georgia State this past spring, and my thesis was an editing project focusing on the rise of multifaceted female characters in television.
What are your best technical or creative skills?
I feel most at home working in a back-end role where I can play with Rails and relational databases. I’m also a quick learner that loves logic-based challenges and finding out how things work. Additionally, having served as a teaching assistant while at TTS, I know how to break down complex topics into easily digestible bites.
What’s next on your list to learn?
I’m always finding more things I want to learn! Right now I’m focusing on honing my current skills, but next I’d like to tackle learning more about Javascript and brush up my front-end chops, hopefully including a framework like Angular. At some point I’d also like to take on Django, as I love knowing multiple different ways to solve a problem.
What’s your ideal internship/job?
I’m looking for a position that will allow me to work in primarily a back-end role while also integrating front-end processes. Ideally, this would be at a startup or dev shop that allows for continual learning with an in-house team to bounce ideas and questions off of and that supports me having other projects outside the company. I’d also like to be able to integrate tech with some of my other loves: cooking, gaming, or television and media.
Interested in startups?
Yes, absolutely! I really admire startups’ flexible nature and embracing of new technologies. I’d also love a way to impact lives with my work, and startups are often the best way to go about that.
Post graduation plans?
I’m actively looking for a full-time junior development position at a small-ish company that will allow me to learn and grow along with them. Until the right opportunity comes along, I’ll continue creating and maintaining my own personal projects to keep my skills sharp and learn more about the craft.
