The first few slots for startups looking to be part of Venture Atlanta have officially been handed out.

On Wednesday night in front of a packed house at Atlanta Tech Village, eight Atlanta-based startups got on stage and presented three minute pitches for a chance to earn a coveted slot at this year's Venture Atlanta conference, the premier venture capital conference that takes place each fall in the city.

The pitch competition, dubbed Pitchfest as part of the busy Atlanta Tech Week agenda, was the first of its kind in giving startups a "fast pass" of sorts directly to Venture Atlanta (which last year saw 630 applications submitted for 88 spots).  Two nominees representing ATDC, Atlanta Tech Village, Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, and Tech Alpharetta each took the stage in front of a panel of local tech judges. At the end of the night, one startup from each of the four startup centers were selected to join the conference, taking place this year October 15-16 at The Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta.
