Olympian Develops Body Part Factory in Atlanta
Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis, is a chronic condition that causes cartilage to break down and its cause is not fully understood. OA doesn’t just affect humans, either. It’s also an ailment of animals. Atlanta-based Nanofiber Health has engineered the world's 1st biosynthetic animal tissue to combat this horrible disease.
Founded in 2013 by former Olympic athlete and current Atlanta resident Timm Peddie, Nanofiber Health offers a patent pending means of treating osteoarthritis. “We developed the Body Part Factory™, a broad technology platform for forming and aligning small fibers down in the nanometer scale (1/100th the diameter of a human hair) that mimic the extracellular matrices found naturally in the body, as a type of scaffold for cellular growth,” explains Peddie.
“Leveraging recent advances in stem cell therapies and biosynthetic tissue engineering, we developed a minimally-invasive procedure that has shown to make lame animals not only walk but run. Currently, there are no treatments for osteoarthritis; people and their pets just suffer through it on painkillers or resort to draconian surgery,” he explains. “We offer a possible means for animals and people to not only walk without pain but to be restored to prior stages of more active life.”

Originally an adviser for Nanofiber's manufacturing partner, Nanofiber Solutions, Peddie is an entrepreneur with an extensive background in tech and a former Olympic cyclist. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, he represented the United States and competed in cycling's 130 mile road race. He then served as a Member US Olympic Committee from 1997-2000.
Following his professional cycling career, Peddie founded FLUID Bandwidth, which developed cloud-based IP services. He then founded Spot Devices, an embedded “Internet of things” company that focused on traffic safety and managing data in municipalities. He also was Product Manager at LightSurf Technologies, who developed the camera phone, created first video alerts on Sprint, developed and launched inter-carrier SMS, going from thousands of SMS to hundreds of millions per day. His background in startups and his current role are things he cherishes. “It is a bumpy yet impassioned road where I get to learn continuously and wear a variety of hats to shatter any attempt having a mundane job,” he says.
While Nanofiber Health has been self-funded to date, they are seeking $250k to $2.5m in investment. With millions of creatures great and small suffering from OA everyday, be sure to stay tuned for Peddie and Nanofiber to make great strides in 2015.
