Decatur Makerspace is a GO | Tech, Art, Tools & Community
Decatur Makers will be a place and community where people share tools, technology and know-how to tinker, invent, build and make cool stuff. An initial fundraising effort enabled them to get off the ground and they have been running a kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the completion of the space. Earlier this week the team hit their goal of $15,000 which means this all-ages makerspace will be open — and making — by the end of the year.
The space is an unused gym at 605 W. Ponce de Leon Avenue, graciously provided by First Christian Church of Decatur. Inside, makers will destroy and create using an array of materials, from metal to microchips and tools ranging from woodworking equipment to 3-D printers, soldering irons, and recycled art. The space is open to hackers, programmers, welders, carpenters, mechanics, artists, builders, designers, scientists, teachers, entrepreneurs, students, adults, kids, and seniors.
Lew Lefton, Executive Director of Decatur Makers, shared with us his excitement for reaching this financial milestone and the plans for the future.
Our kickstarter reached the $15K goal today and we're now seeing solid momentum toward our stretch goal in the last hours of the campaign. It's not too late to back this unique project. Even if you don't back us, puhleeze share the cause with friends and family. If you do, we promise to spell "please" correctly from now on.
Now that we'll have resources in hand, our next step is to officially open our doors ASAP. A hacker-friendly RFID security system will help us do that! Another near term goal is to finish our woodshop. And, our members are putting together a great list of classes and projects that will help the entire community build, share and explore. Deep breath everyone. It really will be that awesome.
We are so grateful to all our supporters for helping us as we develop a community of kids and adults, and a place they can get together for hacking, science, arts and crafts, wood and metal working, electronics and more.
